Your Kines Mentor

Our Story

Your Kines Mentor was started in 2022, three years after we all met for the first time during our course-based Master of Kinesiology (MKin) degree at the University of Calgary. A key concept frequently discussed in our classes was the importance of thinking critically about the material being taught. Our instructors were always reminding us to stop and ask the most important question: “Why?” Taking this lesson to heart, we began to question many of the ideas, concepts, and preconceived notions we had about kinesiology. This has since led to a lot of reflection on the (not-so-unique) struggles we had in getting to where we are now in our education and career paths.

Frustrated with the lack of guidance that both undergraduate and graduate students were (and still are!) given in kinesiology programs, we decided to create Your Kines Mentor.

OUR PROJECT

Our shared love of teaching was one of the biggest driving forces for creating this project. During our MKin degree, each of us worked as teaching assistants (TAs) for undergraduate kinesiology courses and we all continue to teach in different ways with clients on a daily basis. We strongly believe in the importance of authentic, hands-on experiences. The real world is NOT the same as the textbook.

Your Kines Mentor is a site that provides future, current, and past kinesiology students with a one-stop-shop for guidance, advice, and offers the ability to connect with practitioners in the field. Whether through one of the many blog posts covering topics that we four wish we knew sooner or by messaging with one of the Mentors, the goal of this project is to chip away at some of the complexity and confusion that we’ve all personally experienced. We hope to help you answer and understand questions such as:

  • Is a kinesiology degree right for me?
  • What certification is best for me? Do I even need one?
  • What the heck happens after I finish university and enter the real world?
  • What can I do with a kinesiology degree (other than go into physiotherapy or medical school)?

OUR MISSION

  • Promote better regulation of kinesiology and its related job titles
  • Share practical knowledge and provide connections in the field of kinesiology
  • Help future, current, and past kinesiology students reach their potential by providing a unique opportunity for mentorship
